Is There A Place for General Reading
I want you to get the most out of your Tarot reading even if it’s a general reading. The first reading I ever had was a general reading because I didn’t know what to ask for or what this whole Tarot thing was. As my experience with Tarot evolved I learned that a general reading wasn’t the most effective or efficient way to experience or perform your reading. So I eliminated them from my practice.
If you were to ask me for a general reading today I’ve got a whole host of reasons why they’re a disservice to you. I thought it was time to remind myself why they’re important to some people, what they’re for, and if they’re useful at all. So I got online and asked a bunch of people what they thought about them. I talked to clients just like you. I also talked to several other readers.
Overwhelmingly, general readings seem to be the opportunity for someone who hasn’t had a Tarot reading before to better know or better understand not only their Tarot reader but also their current situation in life. So, do you want to get to know your tarot reader better? Do you want to have a better grip on where you are in your life right now? Then you’re going to want to dig into the rest of this.
Your First Time
The first time you came to a Tarot reader you probably didn’t know what kind of question you wanted to ask. You probably didn’t even know what you wanted to ask about. You may not have even known that you can get that specific.
What I imagine you do know, is that there’s a lot going on and you’re not quite sure how or where to focus in order to get your life going in the right direction. When there’s that much going on it’s really hard to pinpoint what the right thing is to work on. It’s also really hard to focus on driving your attention toward something specific.
So the next thing you know you sat down in front of a Tarot reader and he’s saying, “What is it you want help with? There must be something specific that you’re looking for more insight on.” Meanwhile, your brain is like 50 things!
One of the choices that you can make at this point is to ask the Tarot reader if they will do a general reading for you. Not all Tarot readers will do general readings. But there’s a time and place for them. They can have a very specific purpose. They can help focus you.
I Don’t Know What To Ask
You know what can even make it more challenging to come up with a specific question? You’re also thinking, “I’m on the clock.” Which means the minutes are tickin’ by. That means the dollar signs are flyin’. And you’re still trying to decide what you should ask.
On top of that, now there’s pressure to focus on one thing that will solve all your problems. And we know that solving one problem doesn’t solve the 49 other problems that you have. ‘Cause if you have an opportunity to make your life better, why would you want to focus only on one issue?
A general reading gives you and the reader the opportunity to determine what the driving forces in your life are right now. It can also help highlight the opportunities that can best serve you today.
So in a world where there is so much overwhelm on where to focus, a general reading can help pluck out those challenges you’re facing that are the most important right now.
A general reading can be very confirming for you. To know that someone who is not involved in your day-to-day is calling out the same challenges you’re experiencing, that’s immediate awareness for you. It allows you to realize where your energy should be (or might already be) focused.
Opening Up
Sometimes it’s hard just to open up and share with your Tarot reader. Someone who’s probably a stranger to you. When you know the problem that you’re trying to solve is extremely personal and you don’t know the person you’re sitting across from it can be hard to share that story. Especially in all of its detail.
And if this is your first time coming to a Tarot reader, you may be feeling that they’re going to know everything about you. That they’re going to be aware of everything you’ve ever experienced in your life. Or they’re going to know about all the bad stuff you’ve done in your life. Like where you hid your porn. Or they’re going to come up with a prediction about all the horrible things that could go wrong based on the choices you’ve made so far.
To add that anxiety to the overwhelm of problems that already exist it becomes so hard to even let words come out of your mouth.
This might be the perfect time to ask if your reader does general readings. If the reader says no, let them know that you’re super overwhelmed. Tell them that you think a general reading can help you understand where your energy is right now and where it should be focused.
You could also ask the reader what the most important message is from your guides or angels or spirit guides right now. This type of reading is still general, but it allows for a focus for the Tarot reader to hone in on a message from your guides.
Approaching your Tarot reader this way gives them something clear to focus on. And doesn’t feel like you’re asking them to pluck answers out of the sky.
Know Thy Reader
One of the biggest obstacles to getting a Tarot reading is getting to know the Tarot reader themselves. If you don’t have a sense of comfort with the Tarot reader then you’re probably not going to get a Tarot reading.

General Reading Advice
Here’s advice other Tarot readers have for you about general readings:
- Have a clear intention of what you want out of a tarot reading. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be specific. What it does mean is that you have to know what you want to get help out of the reading it self. Clarity for example. “I would like more clarity around X topic.”
- Be open. If you’re not open to having the Tarot reading (even though you’re there!) it can shut down the entire experience for you. That means you’re not going to get everything out of it that you hope to get out of it. So one of the things that you can think about doing in order to be more open is to do whatever grounds you. Whether that be meditating or praying or having some tea.
I also asked several clients of mine what advice they would give to you as someone seeking a general reading. Here’s what they have to say.
- Don’t expect your reader to know everything. So for those of you who fear that a reader may know everything about you, they’re not going to. I can speak from experience. The reading that I’m doing for you is about that moment in particular. I have no intention or desire for that matter to dig into your sordid past or your previous choices. But if you want to gossip about it I’m all ears.
- Don’t withhold information. This is a tough one. How do you know if you’re over sharing? Your reader will be a great guide at this point because they’ll be able to tell you if they need more information or if they just need you to stop talking. Some readers love a ton of information. Some readers don’t want to know anything about what you have a question about other than the question itself. Personally, for me, the more information the better. Because I’d rather take you further than what you already know.
Being Open
I thought it was interesting that this same theme came through not only from readers but also from clients who have been through the experience of having a Tarot reading.
How can someone be more open?
- Get to know your reader. The better you know your reader the more comfort you’re going to feel when you’re around them.
- Come to terms with the idea that closure and openness are constantly shifting. Depending on your day, or state of mind, how someone has spoken to you in the last five minutes, you can experience closure or openness based on those interactions. It’s entirely possible that you may have set yourself up to be closed off without even knowing it. So having the ability to check yourself and determine am I closed off or am I open to this experience will go a long way.
- Being defensive is our default state. It’s natural for you to let your ego protect yourself. Exposure isn’t easy for anyone. Coming to get a tarot reading is a very brave act. That’s why it’s not for everyone. But that’s also why you’re here.
- Love has to be present. Without love, closure is imminent and related to defensiveness.
Do I Do Generals?
I currently don’t offer general readings. But I’m curious how you would feel if I did. Leave me a comment below about your thoughts around general readings and if it would be helpful for you to better know me by having one.
And if you see me on periscope, ask me if I’ll do a general reading for you. It’s entirely possible I’ll say no. But I also gave you keys to get me past the â€no” earlier in this post.
Get Some Focus
Can you be comfortable with me? Only time can tell. After we’ve spent some time together my hope is that eventually you’ll order a reading so that you’ll have more clarity in your life. Once you’ve got that you’ll be focused on achieving your goals. And that means your life is not the same as when you came to me in the first place.
Ride the Momentum
My ultimate goal is to make sure that you get enough clarity through your tarot reading with me that you’re inspired to take action. And when you take action then you got momentum. And that means you’re about to be really focused on achieving your goals and that’s powerful.
