At 7:00 EST, from the comfort of my bed I read about the massacre at Orlando’s Pulse, the gay club where 50 were brutally murdered. Where 50+ more were injured. I was pressed to share the news, numb from the over told story that hit so close to home, and frustrated by the violence caused by so many factors that we can never name terrorism, gun laws, or discrimination as a direct link or solution.
So I turned to my Tarot deck and asked what was the message I could share. Â I drew the cards in the header above. Â The Devil, Father of Cups, and the 6 Cups.
Orlando’s Pulse & The Devil
The sacrifice needed for gun control is not yet at it’s zenith. Â You’d think that the largest massacre of American’s following the multiple murders of hundreds more from assault rifles, those weapons used for WAR, would be the apex, but no. Â We’re not ready. Â We haven’t hit rock bottom. Â Our society is still living in a state of fear. And the fear mongers are in front of us every day trying to build a freaking wall. (Which I think is impossible, but that’s off topic) Fear keeps us obsessed with apathy. Breaking news keeps us numb to terrorism because it’s either in our face everyday or it’s far enough away that we “pray for peace,” and “pray for recovery.” Â #Thoughtsandprayers are a waste of everyone’s time. We’re not paying attention to the real problem. Â The problem is us. And we’re in a very dark place. The problem is our apathy. Â Do we really care about the violence that we see on TV? Or only when it directly affects us because someone we know died? The problem is giving into fear and doing nothing. The crisis we’re seeing with mass murders from assault weapons needs to be addressed in the same way the LGBTQ community addressed AIDS in the 80’s. (That war still isn’t over, BTW)
Orlando’s Pulse & The Father of Cups
On the horizon I think we will see a prominent figure fall.  Much like the assassination attempt on President Reagan, will it will take the sacrifice of a leader for the country to pay attention?  Because I don’t think the death of 50 people in a gay club is going to bother anyone but the gay community. Especially during Pride month. (Harvey Milk, anyone?) How many adults today know that gay clubs are not just frequented by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and maybe some transgender people? Your children go. Bachelorette parties go. LGBTQ friends go.  THERE ARE STRAIGHT GAY BISEXUAL TRANSGENDER LESBIAN ASEXUAL PEOPLE THERE.  Our lives are important and this man disregarded any respect for human life.
Orlando’s Pulse & the 6 Cups
The fabric of the LGBTQ community runs deep. Â And as recent marriage efforts show, we can band together to pass a law. (We have a lot of work to do on that front, because there are so many other issues that need to be addressed) Can we band together to save ourselves, our families, our extended families and breathe new life into society? Â Can we heal and move forward? Â LGBTQ friends, we are the two spirit people. We are the shamans. Â We are meant to move society forward. Our basic rights and access to safety demand that we do.
Time to work through this together. Â Again.
