Do you remember the time that you fell in love and you turned to someone that had a deck and asked if he liked you back? And the cards said yes! In the magic of the moment you were probably ready to learn tarot card reading.
Do you remember the moment you first saw tarot? Do you remember your first reading?
Tarot changed my life. I never wanted to learn tarot card reading. I didn’t even know what it was. Then I got a deck as a present when I was 10 and a whole new world opened.
The Story In The Cards.
The easiest way to feel like you can read the stories in the cards is to picture them like a children’s book. When you first picked up a book, could you read the words? No. You started with picture books! As you flipped through the books you picked up the story from the pictures. You may have even said the story out loud.
If you read those picture books with your parents or grandparents, they probably read the printed words and talked to you about the pictures. And you understood.
You can do that again. All you have to do is start speaking about what you see on the card out loud. Just describe it. That’s the basic skill to learn tarot card reading. You’ll add on to that later.
Learn Tarot Card Reading For Myself.
Now if you want to read for yourself you’ve probably started with a question. The trick to reading the story for yourself is applying the basic technique of reading the story to the conditions you set out in your question. WHAT?
For example, let’s say your question is something like, “What’s the outcome of me asking for a raise?” You pulled the 8 Cups (RWS). You see a man walking away from stacks up cups towards a path headed to a mountain along side a river. I described what I saw. Now how do you apply that to the question? Are you about to start a new approach while leaving one behind? Are you on track but there’s a lot of personal growth to go? The outcome of asking for a raise may mean that you need to be ready for a new industry or that you just may not be ready…yet.
But What If I’m Wrong?
When you’re just getting started to learn tarot card reading there’s a big chance that you’re going to make some mistakes. That’s why there’s so many sites suggesting that you journal your experiences. “˜Cause then you start to associate experience with the card. It’s all trial and error. Like a science experiement.
Personally, I chose not to journal. I chose to keep reading for people and looking for the commonality between readings and cards and questions. And I read. A LOT.
The best part about making mistakes is that you learn from them. Be honest with yourself and the people you’re reading for. Remind yourself and them that you’re learning. You are learning tarot card reading! That’ll take some of the pressure off and engage your brain.
Court Cards Are (Not) Hard.
There seems to be a lot of worry around the court cards. I think it’s because the court system isn’t a part of our lives today. Do you actually have to think about how the King leads your country? Or what the Queen does? How many Knights & Pages do you run across?
The easiest way to think about these cards today is to translate them into people you interact with. Fathers, mothers, sons, daughters. Or C-Suite, director, manager/peer, intern. Or make it fun, like a party, host, diva, playboy, minor.
Can I Learn Tarot In 2 Hours?
Tarot is a practice and an art. Just like any practice or art, learning the basics will lay the foundation for you to be able to create your own style. You will need to put in the time to see the benefits. Picasso drew in the dust before he put murals on canvas. You’ve been practicing language for 30+ years and you’re still learning. Doctors start with cadavers before they practice on the living. Most tarot readers learn the structure of the tarot while journaling and then speaking and then practicing on the living.
Will I Lose Interest?
Tarot comes in and out of our lives as we need it. I put down my decks for about two years. Then I knew it was time to pick them back up again. You’ll know if you need to step away. You’ll also know when you’re being called to work with tarot again.
What If I Don’t Practice?
Without practice, you won’t learn tarot card reading. Plain and simple. For me, the question is how do you practice best? The Tarot Lady has a great coloring book if it helps you “see” the card and if coloring is fun and meditative. Maybe you practice best by reading for other people, like me. Or pulling a card a day to test your prediction for the day would be interesting. Whatever your practice is, just practice!
If you’re signed up to learn tarot with me, we’ll talk about lots of ways to practice.
